He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the East River.

Analogies are the perfect way to create a vivid image in a reader's mind, but it's so easy to get carried away. Some high school English teachers got together and listed their 25 favorite analogies, which are featured at this site:

The 25 Funniest Analogies (Collected by High School English Teachers)

Here are a couple of my favorites from the site:

Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long it had rusted shut. I actually like this one a lot... so much I wish I'd written it.

Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph. Even though this is a bad analogy, I think it's really funny... and doesn't that make it good?

Happy Thanksgiving!

A lot of people find the holidays stressful, and I have to admit that sometimes I'm one of them. But, I also really appreciate getting together with family and making an effort to express the feelings of love we may not always take the time to express throughout the year.

Thanksgiving time holds varied memories for me. I've been miserable with the flu, strep throat and in my not-so-distant adult life the chicken pox. But, I also sold my first book and got engaged around Thanksgiving.

This year, as in all years, there's so much to be thankful for. I'm thankful that the democrats took over the house and the senate, because I truly hope that our troops in Iraq will be home with their families by this time next year.

I'm thankful for family, friends, books, music, pumpkin pie and step aerobics. I'm also thankful for anyone who reads my books or this site.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lunch with Mavis

On Friday, November 10th, my husband I and went to New York to research my work-in-progress, which is set in NYC. One of the first things we did when we arrived in the city was go to the Harlequin offices to meet my new Kimani editor, Mavis Allen.

We toured the offices which are in the Woolworth Building downtown (not far from the World Trade Center site). Then we had lunch with her in a restaurant located within the building. She was so nice and easy to talk to. It's definitely going to be great to work with her on my upcoming novels.
